With the new year right around the corner (how is it already November?!), our Carter Legacy Enterprises team has compiled our top interview tips to help you get a job in the new year. Starting fresh with a job that will help you advance in your career is crucial, and it all starts with a solid, professional interview. Check out our five tips below to take your interview to the next level.

Practice Ahead of Time

Interviewing can be daunting – but it doesn’t have to be if you are prepared and ready by practicing answering common interview questions ahead of time. We recommend Googling the top interview questions for the role and mapping out how you would answer those questions.

When you practice answering common questions ahead of time, you will feel more prepared, confident, and ready while also conjuring up different ideas and thoughts that you can mention if a particular subject isn’t brought up. Additionally, try looking at yourself in the mirror as you practice so you can also work on maintaining eye contact.

Dress Professionally

Dress for success with your interview! When you look good, you feel good, and that will surely show when you interview. You’ll want to iron or steam your clothes the night before to make sure you are ready to go and not scrambling the morning of. Be prepared, so there is no stress – you throw on your outfit and are ready to go!

For men, we recommend wearing slacks and a button-down shirt with a tie to help you level up in your interview. Not only will you look professional and prepared, but you will also carry yourself confidently, knowing you look great! Ladies – make sure to wear bottoms that are of appropriate length or slacks. A professional shirt with your shoulders covered will look great, too! Check out our Pinterest board with professional attire for outfit inspo to help!

Research the Company

We wouldn’t want you to look like you have an egg on your face during your interview, so do your research before your meeting. Know the company’s history, what they do, and your role’s impact on the company ahead of time. Additionally, check out your interviewer/hiring manager’s LinkedIn to get to know them. You can gain insight about who they are beyond their role and might be able to form a connection in the interview based on your findings!

Prepare Questions to Ask Them

As you research the company and your role, remember that this interview isn’t just for them to grill you but for you to get to know them and see if it is a right fit for you. Prepare for your interview by writing down a few questions and taking them with you, and take a pen to write down anything that comes to mind while you are interviewing, too! Getting to know the company and the interviewer will help you decide if this is the right company and career for you.

Follow Through with a Follow Up

Following your interview, don’t let too much time pass before reaching out to your interviewer to thank them for the opportunity and any next steps. If you are still interested in the position, make sure to express that and circle back to a moment from the interview to connect with them. Showing that final effort will help stand out from other candidates.
